Clothing-optional travel in the U.S., by kind of trip

There is no single American nude-resort scene. There are a few separate ones, and they barely overlap: gay men’s resorts in Palm Springs and South Florida, family nudist clubs, a handful of lifestyle resorts, and clothing-optional hot springs in the West. Pick the kind of trip first; the destination usually follows.

Quick answer

Where to go, by who is traveling

Gay men have the most choice: Greater Palm Springs has about a dozen resorts for men within a few miles, and Fort Lauderdale and Key West have men-only guesthouses. Families and traditional naturists should look at clubs such as Cypress Cove near Orlando, Glen Eden in Southern California or Sunny Rest in the Poconos. Couples have fewer options than the marketing suggests, and several are lifestyle resorts; read the difference before booking. Anyone who wants quiet, mixed and nonsexual should consider the Western hot springs, which feel more like retreats than resorts.

California desert

Greater Palm Springs: the densest cluster

The largest cluster we track, and most of it built for gay men. Eleven of the 16 open properties in our rules comparison admit only men, many of them in the Warm Sands neighborhood a short walk from downtown. They range from nine-suite inns like The Hacienda to event-driven CCBC in Cathedral City.

Mixed-gender options are fewer and mostly in Desert Hot Springs, 20 minutes north. Mi Kasa states it is not a swingers’ property. Exotic Dreams in Warm Sands and Sea Mountain in Desert Hot Springs are lifestyle resorts. The area’s best-known naturist hotels, including The Terra Cotta, have closed.

October, November, March and April are the easiest months; in July and August afternoons pass 105°F. Start with the Palm Springs guide, then gay resorts, couples or day passes.

Florida: three scenes in one state

Florida’s options split cleanly by audience, and the drive between them is long enough that you will usually pick one.

Clothing-optional hot springs in the West

These are not resorts in the hotel sense. Lodging is simple, food is often self-catered or communal, and the rules focus on quiet and privacy. The mood is mixed, nonsexual and closer to naturism than to Palm Springs.

Traditional nudism

Family nudist clubs

Clubs are the traditional form of American nudism: private grounds with pools, cabins or campsites, often seasonal outside the Sun Belt. Some require nudity in the pool and hot tub rather than merely allowing it; Sunny Rest and Glen Eden both do. Expect a photo ID check at the gate.

  • Sunny Rest, Pocono Mountains, PA: open roughly April or May through September or October. Nudity is required in the pool and hot tub. Day visitors are accepted without a reservation; rooms, RV sites and tent camping are available. Everyone in a vehicle checks in with photo ID. (official site, checked October 29, 2026)
  • Glen Eden, Temescal Valley, CA: first visits by booked tour with a background check. Profile.
  • Cypress Cove, Kissimmee, FL: an 84-room club 30 minutes from Orlando. Profile.
  • Lake Como and Sunsport Gardens, FL: smaller family clubs. Lake Como, Sunsport Gardens.

If you have never visited one, the first-timer guide covers what happens at the gate and on your first afternoon.

Scope

What this guide doesn’t cover yet

Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Virginia and several other states have long-running nudist clubs. We list a place only after confirming its current status and rules on its own website, and we have not yet done that for those states. They will be added as they are checked.

Public nude beaches are also outside this guide. Their legal status is set locally and changes, so check the managing agency before you go.

Questions

Where is the biggest concentration of clothing-optional resorts in the U.S.?

Among the places we track, Greater Palm Springs has the most: 16 open properties in our rules comparison, most of them gay men’s resorts in and around Warm Sands. Florida follows, split between Fort Lauderdale and Key West guesthouses, family nudist clubs and two lifestyle resorts near Tampa.

Are there U.S. clothing-optional resorts for straight couples that are not swingers’ resorts?

Yes, but the choice is narrower than for gay men. Mi Kasa Hot Springs near Palm Springs states it is not a swingers’ property. Family nudist clubs such as Glen Eden, Cypress Cove, Lake Como, Sunsport Gardens and Sunny Rest welcome couples, and the Western hot springs are mixed and nonsexual.

Do I need a membership to visit?

Sometimes. Harbin Hot Springs requires adults to buy a membership before visiting, Sea Mountain Inn charges a $20 membership per person, and Orient Land Trust members can reserve Valley View further ahead than non-members. Many resorts need only photo ID.
