New Orleans House suits men who want to sleep in the middle of Duval Street’s nightlife and use the pool and backyard as part of it. It is the opposite of Island House’s self-contained resort: smaller, louder by design, and built around the bar downstairs.

What sets it apart

The guesthouse sits above the Bourbon Street Pub at 724 Duval Street, and calls itself the only gay male guesthouse on Duval. Its clothing-optional area is the large backyard, which has a 24-hour pool, a 15-man jacuzzi and the Garden Bar, open until 4 am; there is also a second-floor sundeck and a balcony over the street. The guesthouse says it can give guests free passes to the nightly drag shows at the 801 Bourbon Bar.

That arrangement is the main thing to weigh. A bar that closes at 4 am and a pub with live music downstairs make this a poor choice for light sleepers, and a natural one for anyone who planned to be out late anyway.

It markets itself as a guesthouse for gay men, and its Booking.com listing sets a minimum check-in age of 21 with no children. The official site also says “all-welcome accommodations” are available by phone (305-293-9800), without saying where in the property those rooms are or whether those guests can use the clothing-optional backyard. Ask before booking a mixed group.

What’s included

Every room includes a continental breakfast, and there are drink specials during a daily happy hour. Booking.com lists a microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker in each room, plus a small fitness center and laundry. Check-in runs from 3 to 7 pm, so late arrivals should call ahead. The official site doesn’t publish rates or a cancellation policy; both appear only when you pick dates.
